He is best known as the lead singer and guitar player for the band Goo Goo Dolls. Johnny lost both of his parents by the time he was 16. While he was being brought up by his older sisters he started playing the guitar. He started the Goo Goo Dolls in 1985 with Robby Takac. Rzeznik and Takac were formerly in the band The Beaumonts. Originally Robby was the singer and Johnny gradually took over. They were signed to Celluloid records and released their first album. They were then signed to Metal Blade. The band has had several hits including "Iris", "Name", "Broadway", "Black Balloon", and "Slide". They have had 14 top ten singles and have sold over 10 million albums worldwide. The band released their 10th album Magnetic in 2013. Johnny wrote two songs for the Disney film Treasure Planet. He was a judge on Fox's The Next Great American Band.
